This was a van built on a 2021 Ford Transit chassis. The vehicle accomodates the need of the purchaser to move between her home in NH and her children's residences throught the east coast while still accomodating her dog. When off grid, the van powers itself from over 600 Watts of rooftop solar panels. When connected to shore power it has a 8000 BTU air conditioner that replaces a $4,000 rooftop unit. Hundreds of hours were spent on the detailing of vehicle including matching walls to flooring, installation of side windows, and the design of custom bezels for windows. Almost a dozen USB ports are in the van, hot and cold running water, a shower drain for internal shower, 21 gallon water tank, swivel seat on passengr side, deep drawn under mount sink, hardwood countertop, fold-down hardwood counter top extension, 10 liter hot water tank, and many more features.
The major design challenge in this build was to accomodate a third row bench seat while not comprising the van's internal space. We needed to fix the seat to the vehicle's chassis and leave as much internal space as possible. Unlike any other Transit build, we recessed all the internal walls to freee up over 9" of space of horizontal.. The other issue was to provide air conditioning from shore power while not compromising the vehicle's ability to power itself from over 600 Wats solar power.
Design philosphy:
This van was designed for adventure and daily practical use. . Although walls, floor, and ceiliing are all insulated, the van will require a space heater for 4-season operation.. With pearl, the owner wanted the ability to take long-distance trips in the van and be a self contained unit powered by 120 Volt shore power; a apartment on wheels..
